Doro W'et (Ethiopian Chicken Stew)

Doro W'et is Ethiopia's beloved chicken stew, rich with bold spices and slow-simmered flavor. Made with Berbere Ethiopian Seasoning, it's a comforting, deeply savory dish that's perfect served over rice or with flatbread.

Ingredients (Servings: Serves 4)

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2 medium yellow onions, chopped
  • 1 tsp. Dehydrated Minced Garlic
  • 1/4 cup Berbere Ethiopian Style Seasoning
  • 1 tsp. Dehydrated Ground Ginger
  • 2 cups chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup tomato powder + ½ cup water to make paste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 2 lbs. boneless chicken thighs, cubed
  • 1/3 cup natural peanut butter
  • 4 hard boiled eggs, peeled and scored

Steps

  • Heat butter over medium heat in a large pot or Dutch oven. Add onions and saute until translucent, about 5 min.
  • Add garlic, Berbere, ginger, chicken stock, tomato paste, and black pepper, and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Add chicken to pot, stirring to ensure chicken pieces are fully coated, and simmer for 20 min.
  • Remove a small amount of sauce into a bowl and combine it with the peanut butter, stirring until smooth.
  • Return the sauce and peanut butter mixture to the pot and stir to combine. Lightly score the eggs (so they can soak up the sauce) and add them to the pot.
  • Continue simmering until chicken is cooked through, about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of your chicken pieces.
